El Jebel Medical Staff What are the costs of treatment
at The Shriners Hospitals do not charge for the care they provide to children. In fact none of the Shriners Hospitals even have a billing department. The Shriners even provide transportation for the child and a parent or guardian, if the child is referred to an out-of-town Shriners Hospital and allow the parent or guardian to stay with the child at the hospital if the child is required to stay overnight. The only cost to the parent if they stay with the child, is the cost for their own food if they choose to have the hospital provide their meals. So, since there is no charge to the parents for this care, does that mean that the care their children receive will be substandard? Not at all! The Shriners Hospitals for children provide world-class treatment. Many of these hospitals are also medical teaching hospitals, providing advanced training to top-notch physicians and other medical professionals who then help even more children at their own medical institutions. The care provided to children at the Shriners Hospitals is not free. In fact, it is extremely expensive. The Shriners just do not charge their patients or their families for this care. Currently, 99.94% of every dollar provided to the Shriners Hospitals is spent on direct patient care. Few, if any, charitable organizations even come close to this high ratio. The Shriners Hospitals are funded by dues paid by the individual Shriners, additional member gifts, bequeaths, and other gifts. The Shriners Hospitals are a prime example of Masonic Charity, since all members of the Shrine must first be Masons before they are eligible to become Shriners. Back to Top El
